Joint metadata expert meeting between WISDOM and MRC/IKMP in Phnom Penh - 7.-8. September

In Semptember 2011 Verena Klinger (DLR) and Martin Seiler (lat/lon GmbH) represented the WISDOM project in a metadata expert meeting which was held jointly with the MRC/IKMP in Phnom Penh.  The meeting was planned as a follow-up activity of the 'Workshop on Mekong Delta Coordination and Geo Data Standardization in the Water Sector' which was held in April 2011 on Phu Quoc. Discussions during that workshop showed a high potential for cooperation in the field of metadata exchange and the need for further strategic and technical discussions.

All ZEF PhDs within WISDOM completed!

On the 17th of June, Nadine Reis graduated summa cum laude at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bonn. Nadine was the first out of 14 PhD students of the WISDOM project, who submitted her thesis as early as December 2010. Nadine Reis’ dissertation deals with rural water supply in the Mekong Delta and, most importantly, contributes to the understanding of policy-making processes in Vietnam. The full thesis will soon be published in the ZEF Development Studies Series, Lit Verlag, Germany.

Singapore International Water Week 2011
   

About 1,200 experts participated at the Singapore International Water Week from the 4th till the 8th of July 2011, which was themed "Sustainable Water Solutions for a Changing Urban Environment". About 350 oral and poster presentations were given on the impact on water by global population growth, increasing urbanisation and rising emerging economies. The focus at Singapore International Water Week 2011 went beyond urban water solutions and included climate change and management of watersheds and river basins.

The next generation of ZEF junior researchers started field work

In Mid-May 2011, Huynh Thi Phuong Linh, Panagiota Kotsila and Siwei Tan arrived in Can Tho for their 10-month-long field research. All scientists are junior researchers at the Center for Development Studies (ZEF), Bonn and members of the ZEF/WISDOM team. They are hosted by the Can Tho University, where they have an office; senior scientists Dr Le Viet Dung, Dr Bui Thi Nga and Dr Nguyen Duy Can have also graciously agreed to act as local fieldwork supervisors.

WISDOM Project Annual Meeting of German Partners at DLR in Oberpfaffenhofen

The annual meeting of all German WISDOM Project Partners was held at the premises of the DLR in Oberpaffenhofen on the 14th and 15th of June 2011. After a short introduction of the “newcomers” Claudia Künzer reported about project related developments of the last 12 month, such as the successful project start in November 2011, conducted workshops and numerous undertaken field campaigns. This was followed by a brief description of strategic alignments of the project as well as new inter-project cooperation’s.

Graduation of WISDOM PhD Students from ZEF

On May 16th, Tatjana Bauer successfully defended her PhD thesis at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Bonn. Tatjana Bauer is the second out of 14 PhD students, who received her degree within the first phase of the WISDOM project. The defense took place at the Center for Development Research (ZEF), where Tatjana was enrolled as junior researcher for more than three years.

 

Workshop on Mekong Delta Coordination and Geo Data Standardization in the Water Sector

Vietnam and especially the Mekong Delta is currently under focus of intensive activities of foreign supported environmental projects, funded for example by Danish, Dutch, German, American and international governmental agencies and NGOs to support Vietnam in fighting the predicted effects of a potential sea level rise, caused by global warming. WISDOM together with the Southern Representative Office of MOST organized a workshop on the 28th and 29th of April 2011 in Phu Quoc / Vietnam, to contribute to a better methodological and thematic linkage between the different projects.

First Phd student of the WISDOM Project graduated

On March 25th, 2011, Pham Cong Huu successfully defended his PhD thesis at the Faculty of Math and Science of the University of Bonn. The defense took place at the Centre for Development Research, ZEF, where Pham Cong Huu worked for more than three years.

In his thesis, he investigated the planning and implementation of dyke systems in the Mekong Delta.

 

First PhD Seminar of WISDOM’s Second Phase held in Bonn

The first PhD Scientific Seminar of WISDOM’s second project phase was held between 04th and 07th April in Bonn, organized and hosted by UNU-EHS. The seminar allowed the PhD students to present their research proposals to their fellow researchers within the project. In particular possible synergies and fields of collaboration as well as the integration of research findings into the WISDOM information system could be discussed. In addition, keynote lectures by expert senior researchers from Germany and Vietnam contributed important background information and impulses for the upcoming work.

Contribution of the WISDOM Project to the International Workshop "People Centred Approach in Flood and Land Management in the Mekong Basin"

The conference, which was organized by the Mekong River Commission Secretariat (MRCS), the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), GFA Consulting Group and GIZ took place in Luang Prabang, Laos from the 23-25th of February 2011. The focus of the conference was to exchange experiences, lessons learnt, identifying emerging trends and methodologies towards a sustainable implementation of flood and land management as well mitigation measures.

Maps on different topcis for Download

Under Resources there is the new section Maps which provides information products for the Mekong Delta as maps for download in different resolutions. There can be found maps on inundation and flooding, landcover classifications in different resolutions, water quality products, impervious surface maps and other products.

WISDOM Phase 2 Kick Off held on 12.11.2010 in HCMC

On November 12th 2010 the WISDOM Vietnamese-German project consortium met for the Phase 2 Kick Off meeting in Ho-Chi-Minh City (HCMC). The workshop was jointly organized by the Southern Institute for Water Resources Research (SIWRR) and the German Aerospace Centre, DLR, supported by the projects local CIM expert at MOST-SRO. During the one day workshop research activities and results of phase 1 were presented and the proposed activities for the next three years in WISDOM phase 2 were introduced..

WISDOM meets MRC IKMP in Phnom Penh on 09.11.2010

On November 9th 2010 WISDOM delegates from DLR, Wuerzburg University and CIM/MOST visited representatives of MRC’s Integrated Knowledge Management Program (IKMP) at the new MRC Secretary premises in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Beforehand meetings and discussions showed potentials and needs for stronger cooperation between WISDOM and IKMP on a technical, data exchange and administrative level , as well as for the development of a joint strategy fostering Mekong Basin Development .

DLR / University of Wuerzburg present six WISDOM related talks at the ACRS in Hanoi, 01-04 Nov 2010

Between November 1st and 4th 2010 the 31st Asian Conference on Remote Sensing (ACRS) was held in Hanoi, Vietnam. The ACRS is one of the most important regional conferences on Remote Sensing and Geosciences in Asia and gathers experts from the scientific- and user communities. The German Aerospace Center and the Wuerzburg University contributed with 6 oral presentations on new methodologies and applications directly related to the WISDOM project. The presentations comprised activities and results in the fields of remote sensing, data management and information systems.

WISDOM Project as invited Keynote Speech at the Greater Mekong Subregion Workshop, GMS, in Kunming, China

The WISDOM Projects results of the project's first phase have been presented on October 29th, at the Greater Mekong Subregion Workshop, held from October 29th to Ocotber 31st in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China. The workshops extensive programme featured speakers from Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and China - thus, all the Mekong Basin counrteis were represented. International experts from Germany, Australia and the USA rounded of the Programme.
