Dr. Joern Birkmann (UNU-EHS) presented some selected findings of the WISDOM project in a high level expert workshop on “Climate Change and Climate Extremes in Vietnam”. The expert workshop in Hanoi on 17th of August 2012 dealt with the launch of the IPCC SREX report, which was presented by Prof. Pachauri /Chairman of the IPCC and lead authors of the report, such as Dr. Bach Tanh Sinh / Director of the Dep. of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology and Dr. Joern Birkmann / United Nations University – Institute for Environment and Human Security.
The event was opened by the Minister of MoNRE Mr. Nguyen Minh Quang and the Vice Minister of MoNRE Mr. Ha as well as the UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam Ms. Pratibha Mehta. More than 175 experts, representatives of international organizations, governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations attended the expert workshop in Hanoi. Dr. Birkmann underscored in his presentation the importance to address the dynamics of exposure and vulnerability in future risk reduction and adaptation strategies. In this context he also highlighted selected results of the ongoing WISDOM project, which focuses among other issues on different vulnerability profiles of communities in the Mekong Delta. The event which was strongly supported by UNDP in Vietnam and offered the opportunity for direct exchanges thereafter in three working groups.
